This set is called “Dortn,” meaning “The Beyond” in Yiddish. It uses the Yiddish folk song “Dortn, dortn, ibern vaserl” as a refrain that repeats over the course of the performance. The song speaks of a distant love “across the water,” and in the mix it serves as a link back to sounds and memories from another time. Yet, the word “dortn” has historically been used by radical Yiddish activists to describe the global Yiddish diaspora, spread out across the world yet bound together. To them, “dortn” represents a shared sense of being beyond any single Nation State or central authority. It’s through this expansive sense of being, they argue, that we can truly be in solidarity with those around us.
