Spatial Awareness with Carly Barton

  • The Sound Lounge @ Percy 1700 North Front Street Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, 19122 United States (map)

Hello Spatial fam! Oh boy, oh boy, do we have a very special treat for you…

Dubbed Portland’s secret weapon and sludgelord extraordinaire, Carly Barton, is a designer, composer, DJ, anime enthusiast, and aspiring alchemist in the ranks of some of PDX’s most forward-thinking artists. They have spent the last decade + in the PNW as a piano teacher, playing and organizing events, working at record stores (shout out Musique Plastique, and giving head scratchies to their cat, Trash.

The bulk of their production catalog prioritizes world-building electronic music, dub, and contemporary piano composition, exploring and creating genre-bending scapes with a specialty in collage. Carly’s published work includes a wide-ranging collection of self-releases, sheet music, and other print media projects, as well as albums and remixes released via labels such as MANIC!, Disposable Commodities, iideo, Blankstairs, and more.

With a specialty in controlled chaos, no rules apply. Carly is notorious for playing longform sets at special gatherings in the forests of the PNW that can stretch upwards of 12 hours. These open-format demonstrations open rifts in time and thin the veil between spaces known and unknown, and embody the nature of what we here at Spatial Awareness strive for.

We are fortunate enough to get just a taste of their witches' brew. This one is polychrome, holographic, rare, for the heads, and is not one to be missed under any circumstances.

Spatial Awareness is 9 pm-12 am. Carly Barton is the DJ. Our door is donation-based with a suggested sliding scale of $10-$20 - no one will be turned away. Donations go towards paying the artists and organizers, and are greatly appreciated if you have the means to contribute!

Note: Spatial Awareness has zero tolerance for any kind of discrimination, including racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, ableism, ageism, antisemitism, xenophobia, or any inappropriate behavior such as unwanted touching, grouping, or leering. If someone is making you feel uncomfortable, let our staff know, and we will remove the person from the space. Let’s keep each other safe and have a good time!
